Congratulations on your engagement!
If you are getting married this year you probably have the big things locked down like the date and the venue, right? But what about all of the other decisions you need to make? Who knew how many choices you had to make once you are engaged? Even Pinterest can get overwhelming with all of the different options presented. We may not be able to help you with all of the pieces and parts of your wedding, but if we may, allow us to give you a bit of advice on how to tackle the big decisions ahead.
Dream a Little
Starting with the details can give anyone a headache. Take a step back and think about what you want people to say when they leave your wedding. Do you want people to comment on your attention to detail? Are you hoping that people notice the efforts you took to make sure they were comfortable? Is the main objective to ensure that everyone has a good time? If you and your partner can close your eyes and think about the things you want your guests to experience or feel on your wedding day, it can help to inform what style choices you want to make!
If attention to detail is important to you, then you may want to make sure your tables are immaculate with beautiful stationery and well-designed china and glassware. When guest comfort is the top priority, then great chairs and patio heaters may be important. After identifying the what you want out of the big day, make sure your budget reflects those choices.
Focus Your Vision
Pinterest, wedding magazines, and blogs are wonderful resources. They can help you begin to brainstorm your wedding design. When you feel like you have a good handle on your ideas, take a scalpel and cut back. Take the 60 pins and see if you can fit your design ideas on just one or two pages. Why is this helpful? You can take away any of the extras that aren’t part of the core vision and it will help you determine what is really important. Also, your vendors will appreciate having a more concise vision so they can make recommendations based on their style and strengths. Do you want an exact duplicate of the thing you saw online? Or do you want something custom designed for just you two?
Holden from Holden Michael Events happened to be in our showroom as I was writing this blog post so I asked him for a bit of advice from a planner’s perspective. Here are his thoughts:
The inspiration photos you show your designer or other vendors should be things you absolutely love and must have at your wedding. So many clients show me countless photos of things they thought were ‘nice’ or ‘could work’ and that’s not helpful. Show me the things you dream about and can’t live without. I don’t want to design a wedding that’s ‘nice’; I want to design a wedding of dreams.
Play to Your Strengths
Know what you are good at and when you need to ask for help. Is your spacial intelligence off the charts? You can ask for the dimensions of your venue and design the flow of your event. Do you have an eye for design? Set up an appointment to come into our showroom and play with linens, china, glassware, etc. to make your vision come to life. Your wedding is a chance for you and your partner to show your friends and families your love story, and that includes your skill sets!
It is also okay if you can’t tell the difference between a daisy and a delphinium (or if you don’t even know that those are flowers)! Ask for help. Tell your florist that you like green, white, and your budget is X amount. You are allowed to say that plates don’t really matter to you. We can figure out the best fit for you based on your menu and style of food service. We, as vendors, love to help make recommendations based on your styles choices. You have permission to give up some of the decisions, and if you define your vision like we talked about above we can make sure it matches your overall event feel. Call us or stop into our showroom if we can help in anyway!
